do I describe it? Texas. Green lawns. Pick-up trucks in the
driveways. A few people walking their dogs now and again. Kids riding
bikes. Something was missing to make it complete. But I couldn’t put

“Is this it?” I
asked, glancing at the home we just pulled up next to. Classic
suburban house. Well, classic suburban Texas house. I liked it

She nodded. “Yes, it
is.” The car stopped. “Can I talk to you one more time

I rolled my eyes. “Mom,
I can never address you as ‘Janis’.” Even saying the name just
felt funny. I remember in the first grade whenever Mrs. Fickle asked
me what the lady picking me up’s name was I said “mommy”.
Hey, I was in the first grade. I didn’t know any better.
“I know,” My
mother laughed, nervously. “You understand that this could
change your life forever, right?” She looked me square in the
eye. That wasn’t normal because I was usually distracted, biting my
nails, fiddling my thumbs or looking out a window. We would just
talk. That right there proved this was a special event. “But
whatever happens is God’s decision. I won’t be upset no matter what
happens, I promise. If I break that promise, please tell me.”
