As soon as the car stopped in the driveway of the Hills,( located on Rainy St.) Bobby rushed out and threw the door. Not bothering to close it. Or the car door for that matter. He was afraid. Not sure of what his mom would do if she found out. Or worse….his dad. Actually now that he thought of it he shouldn’t have rushed out of the door and into the house like that. It just made him more suspicious. He winced as he took out the clothes from his bag and placed them into his special hiding places. After he put away his new clothes he folded all of the receipts into one big pile. And put it into one of his old folders. Then tucked the folder into his pile of old children’s books. After that he had nothing else to do but go outside and walk.

Outside Bobby felt better with the cool breeze gently blowing on his face. And the ever disappearing sunset. He sighed as his mind brought him to lingering thoughts that he couldn’t help but bring out of himself. Oh man! What’s wrong with me….why am I so worried anyway? I mean it’s not so bad…Liking anime can’t make my dad to upset. I’ve gotten into worse things in the past before. Besides this hobby will ‘whoop me into shape and what not’. But that’s not the worst of my problems dang it! The worst is Goku. He’s cool. He’s so dang cool! But really different. And dad wouldn’t like him at all. So what do I do with Goku? I can’t just forget about him. That wouldn’t be right at all. But I can’t let my dad see him until I’ve improved…..Well I’ll just have to be sneaky about it. And if he finds out then I’ll just have to deal with it. And that’s THAT! Bobby spent a few more minutes walking around the neighborhood until the setting sun had finally set. Forcing him to go home and get some grub.
He reached home and entered the house were the first thing that reached him was the scent of food wafting around his nostrils. And just like that his mouth watered and his stomach grumbled.
He closed the door and automatically headed for his room.
“Bobby! ” It was the sing song voice of his now not so angry mother. He assumed. “What is it mom”
“Dinner is ready. Go wash up and come to the table”
“Alright”
Bobby, instead of heading to his room, headed to the bathroom just down the hall. He walked in and the first thing he noticed while entering the bathroom was his reflection. His eyes gazed at a boy that he realized wasn’t really him. This boy looked sturdy. But vulnerable in a way. His eyes held shiny with a look that told a story. A story of a boy about to take a journey in the ways of contentedness and happiness. But still with worry, a worry that was wrapped around him like a thin piece of cloth. He took his gaze away from the bathroom mirror and started washing his hands.
Dried them.
And headed for the kitchen table and sat down with his family.
His mother smiled at him while his father just stared blankly with his same expression.
They said grace and dug in.
Bobby looked down at his food and calculated in his head on what was good and what was bad. good: broccoli, chicken, carrots, bread, and a mini salad with a glass of water.
bad: Cheese, butter, salad dressing, the skin on the chicken.
With his mini calculations complete he picked up his fork and dug into his salad.
“How was your day Hank”
“It was pretty good I’ll tell you what. I sold four tanks of propane and 2 Vaugner grills”
“Good for you Honey. How was your day Bobby”
Bobby finished his salad and started stabbing his carrots,”It was amazing”
Hank spread butter onto his bread,”What was amazing about it”
Bobby composure slipped before he spoke, “Ummm….you know. It’s the last day of school and all”
Hank nodded, “Sounds happy ta me.” Hank ate into his bread.
Peggy cut in with almost as much enthusiasm as Bobby,”Well I don’t know about you two but I’m going to have a pretty fulfilling summer. I was looking in to days paper and I noticed a job opening. And it was too good to be true! Guess what I’m going to be doing this summer”
Before Bobby or Hank could put their guesses into play Peggy blurted it out.
“I’m going to be a private tutor for a new family that just moved into town. I’ll be meeting my newest pupils tomorrow”
Bobby smiled, “That’s really great mom”
Hank frowned, “Well I hate to break this to you Peggy, but did you consider what kind of children they would be? Do you know what they look like? What their parents do for a living”
Peggy frowned, “Well my client is Mr. Bluborn. He works as an assistant in homemaking. He has twins, I think around 12. One boy and one girl”
Hanks forehead creased, ” I don’t like this. But your an adult so I’ll back off”
Bobby grew slightly depressed, and with good reason. He absolutely hated it when his father criticized his mother. Why couldn’t he accept and be happy for her? he would maybe never know.
Bobby pealed off the skin of his chicken, “Well I’m happy for you mom! I’m sure you’ll do great”
Peggy’s face automatically brightened at his words of encouragement.
“Thank you Bobby…..Bobby. Why are you taking the skin off? You love the skin”
Hank looked up slightly. But still mostly paying attention to his broccoli dipped in cheese.
“Well I didn’t feel like eating the skin today”
“Bobby I’m a little worried about you. Actually now that I think about it you’ve been acting off all day”
This time Hank laid his judging eyes onto his son. “This doesn’t have anything to do with what you said this morning and what not. Cause I don’t want you to be turning odd n me again”
Bobby felt the pressure of the sudden attention on him build. But this time he thankfully recovered. “No dad, nothings going mom, I’m not sure why I’ve been acting weird. Maybe it’s just because I’m becoming a man and all. I”m turning 14 soon ya know”
“Well alright Bobby. This is good. Hey maybe you’ll grow some facial hair soon enough”
Hank dropped his attention from Bobby and finished off his food. Bobby had satisfied his worries. bobby had him convinced. For now.
Peggy seemed to have reacted the same way as well. But Bobby could still tell that she was still weary of him. I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye out for mom. Don’t want my plans to be ruined. I want them to be surprised when they find out how much I will change. Hopefully that way I can make it easier for dad to accept Goku as my new friend. I hope.
Dinner was soon finished. Bobby was about to exit the kitchen when.
RING RING!
RING RING!
Bobby’s reflexes kicked in and he swiftly picked of the telephone and said hello.
Bobby new who was calling before he even hear his voice.
“Hello, may I please speak to Bobby”
“Your already talking to him”
“Oh hey Bobby ma’ man”
“Hey G-..dude”
Bobby almost let himself slip. He had been so close to spoiling his entire plans with just the simple lapse of saying his new friends name! He would have to be more crafty from now on. Crafty like a ninja.
“Hey Bobby, Do you still want to hang out tomorrow? I was thinking I could just pick you up and we could decide on were to go from there”
Bobby’s worry grew,”That sounds good. But let me ask my parents first. Hold on”
Bobby turned around and faced his parents who were cleaning off the table. They obviously heard, as they spoke, ” Who is that on the phone and what do you want to ask us”
His mother was always good at bombarding him with questions first.
Bobby once again stuttered slightly but then spoke calmly, “I was wandering if I could go hang out at the park with some friends from school, cause most of them are going away to vacation soon and I want to say goodbye”
Peggy smiled, “If it’s alright with your father”
Hank nodded, “So’kay. Just be back around nine”
Bobby shone,”Thanks you guys”
“They said it was okay”
Bobby could tell that Goku was generally exited.
“Sweet man! I’ll meet you at the edge of rainy street at eight am sharp”
“Sounds good to me”
There was some muffled noises and then the sound of an older woman on the other line.
She seemed to be yelling about something escaping from its cage.
“I’ve got to go Bobby. My mom needs my assistance. Bye”
“Bye”
click Bobby hung up the phone and told his parents all the necessary info about the next day then headed off to bed. Knowing that tomorrow was going to be a super spacial awesome day.
